Think you're funny?

Well prove it in the Charleston Comedy Festival's Stand-Up Competition.

The annual throwdown has become wildly popular, attracting topnotch talent, selling out every show, and pulling a huge, rowdy crowd for the finals. Last year, Timmy Sherrill from Wilmington, N.C. won with a raunchy but hilarious set.

Anyone can perform, and registration will close once all five preliminary rounds are full. And they will fill up. Twelve comedians performing in each round will be limited to a five-minute set (lights out after time allotted). The audience will vote for their favorite two comedians and the top three performers will move on to the semifinals.

In addition to being able to crow victory, the winner will take home $1,000 cash money.

Up to the challenge?

Registration costs $20 (nonrefundable) and must be paid via Paypal.

It is my belief that Harold as a structure and philosophy of play is the basis for all comedic work, whether written for the stage, screen, or improvised. We have Del Close to thank for not only the recognition and respect improvisation has received as an Art but for a lot of what we consider to be comedy today. I never worked with Del myself, but I am extremely lucky to have worked with people who learned directly from him before he passed away. And I am proud to have Del watch over me, my students and my company at DSI.

Getting on stage at DSI the last few months has been refreshing. I was doing standup and improv in New York City for the last 5 years until I came back to NC just a few months ago. I did standup in some great clubs and performed with incredibly talented comics while I was there. I was lucky enough to do shows with Ben Bailey, Joe Franklin, and Jim Gaffigan. Those are just a few of the established comics. I also did shows with younger comics that are now starting make names for themselves. I was also lucky enough to do a very short performance at The Apollo Theater in Harlem. Tough crowd!

First, it's nice to just have the stage time. I have't had an issue getting a spot on the Thursday night show. Most of the clubs in New York want you to do bringer shows first in order to perform there. That means you HAVE to bring anywhere from 5-10 people just to get on their stage. I did a few of these and they were nothing but stressfull. You can't even think about your set because you are worried about your people showing up.

Second, I've also found that I can take more risks on stage at DSI. This is because I don't have to do my best material in order to impress some casting agent or booker. When you do the same set over and over again, you can't grow as a comic. I sometimes do the same material, but I'm always trying out 1 or 2 new jokes in my set.

Lastly, DSI is a great supportive environment. Being able to try new material out in front a paying audience is huge. Open mics where the audience is just other comedians don't really gage how the joke will go with a regular crowd. I have found the audience at DSI to be attentive and the other comics on the show are respectful and literally pat each other on the backs.
